Following the success of 2014″s blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer is moving full steam ahead on the follow-up, X-Men: Apocalypse, for a 2016 release date.

The film, set in the 1980s, will call on younger actors to portray series favourites Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm – the characters previously played by James Marsden, Famke Janssen and Oscar winner Halle Berry respectively.

And it looks like two equally rising rising stars in Hollywood are vying for the role of Jean Grey. Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner – best known for playing Sansa Stark – and Atonement actress Saoirse Ronan are both reportedly testing for the part, according to Latino-Review.com.

Meanwhile, the part of Cyclops, aka Scott Summers, is said to be a three-horse race between British actor Taron Egerton, who”ll star opposite Colin Firth in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Mud star Tye Sheridan and If I Stay actor Jamie Blackley.

Whoever replaces Halle as Storm, meanwhile, will have mighty shoes to fill. Two young actresses being considered for the role are Alexandra Shipp – who played late R&B singer Aaliyah in a critically panned Lifetime movie recently – and Disney star Zendaya, who, ironically, was originally cast in the Aaliyah TV movie and later dropped out following backlash from the singer”s family and fans.

Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman recently revealed he isn”t yet confirmed to star in X-Men: Apocalypse.

He told The Happy Sad Podcast: "There”s still a lot unknown about that, actually."

Hugh also revealed that plans to make another Wolverine movie are progressing.

He said: "I have been speaking to the guys and I”m not at liberty to say exactly what”s going on, [but] there are some very exciting things about integrating the whole X-Men world, including the Wolverine movie.

"There are some really cool things going on."

X-Men: Apocalypse will feature returning actors Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy.
