World Dwarf Games gold medallist 'died from overdose of painkilling drugs'

A former gold medallist at the World Dwarf Games died from an overdose of painkilling drugs, an inquest has heard.

Ruth Smith, 22, had been prescribed the anti seizure drug midazolam and Co-codamol which is made up of paracetamol and codeine.

Her body was found in her shared flat at Falmouth University in Cornwall in November 2013.

Miss Smith won a gold medal as a junior competitor in the sport of boccia which is similar to bowls at the World Dwarf Games in 2005.

She picked up three medals at the event in Birmingham – two silver and one bronze – for the shot, discus and javelin.

GoogleStudies: Ruth was a student at Falmouth University 

Tests showed lethal levels of paracetamol and codeine in her system, pathologist Dr Julianne Stolte told the Truro hearing in Cornwall.

She said Miss Smith died from an excess of the drugs with epilepsy as a possible factor.

The inquest heard journalism student Miss Smith had phoned the our of hours Serco he alth service feeling unwell after a fit in November 2013.

Medical records showed she was prescribed the anti seizure drug midazolam and Co-codamol which is made up of paracetamol and codeine.

Miss Smith, from Prestwich near Manchester, had several he alth issues including dwarfism, spinal problems, epilepsy and depression.

The inquest continues.
