Households have been left £1,127 a year worse off on average since the Coalition took powerin 2010 due to Tory benefit cuts and tax rises, experts warn today.

The worst affected were low-income families with children, who were hit by cuts to means-tested benefits and tax credits.

But the Institute for Fiscal Studies report found the childless middle-classes “gained significantly”.

Shadow Treasury Minister Cathy Jamieson accused David Cameronof a “clear betrayal” of his promise to be family friendly.

She said: “For all the Government’s claims, this report shows that they have raised tax by over £13.5 billion a year, and for millions of working people the rise in VAT and cuts to things like tax credits have more than offset changes to the personal allowance.”
