Next Newcastle manager: Top 11 contenders if Alan Pardew leaves St James' Park

Newcastle appear to be on the lookout for a new manager with Alan Pardew on the verge of joining Crystal Palace.

The 53-year-old was the Eagles” first choice to replace Neil Warnock and was known to be keen on a move back to London, where he managed West Ham and Charlton.

A compensation deal was arranged between the two clubs on Monday – believed to be worth £2.25million with Pardew tied down at St James” Park until 2020.

Should he move to Selhurst Park as expected, it will bring an end to the second-longest Premier League managerial tenure across the current division.

But who could replace Pardew in the North East?

Here are 11 possible contenders for the position.

Frank de Boer – 3/1

Getty ImagesFavourite: De Boer has been in charge of Ajax for four seasons

The Dutchman has been in his first senior position with Ajax since 2010. In each of the four seasons since taking over, he has won the Eredivisie title, leading to many thinking he has reached something of a glass ceiling.

De Boer has also been linked with the Tottenham and Liverpool jobs in the past but his agent insists he won”t walk away this season.

Fabricio Coloccini – 5/1

Michael ReganSkipper: Coloccini is unlikely to end his playing career just yet

The Magpies skipper is quite an odd selection so high on the betting odds. At the age of 32, he appears to still have a good couple of years left in him on the field.

Coloccini”s wish to return home to Argentina just last year decreases the likelihood of him sticking around long-term.

Tony Pulis – 8/1

GettyPulis: Could the ex-Palace boss return to management?

After leaving Palace, Pulis has been linked with a series of positions – none of which have tickled his fancy. The ex-Stoke boss will ensure some much-needed stability at St James” Park but are his ambitions too high?

His potential relationship with Mike Ashley would certainly be one to keep an eye on.

Steve Bruce – 9/1

Mike HewittGeordie: Bruce was a boyhood Newcastle fan

With his Hull side struggling at the foot of the Premier League table, would Bruce be tempted by a return to the North East?

Having grown up a Newcastle fan, the 53-year-old never won the Sunderland fans over during his time at the Stadium of Light and would be a decent option.

Peter Beardsley – 14/1

Serena TaylorContender: Beardsley knows the club inside out

Should Mike Ashley want a cheap option to replace Pardew – Beardsley could be his man.

The former Toon favourite now coaches the club”s development squad and has been tipped to take the reins as caretaker boss should Pardew go to Palace.

Bernd Schuster – 16/1

Christof KoepselOut of work: Schuster was sacked by Malaga at the end of last season

The German could be an option for the Magpies due to the fact he is out of work – meaning they won”t have to pay any compensation for his services.

Schuster”s last job was with Malaga but he was sacked by the Spanish side after just one season

Rafael Benitez – 16/1

Stu ForsterReturn: Could Rafa move back to the Premier League?

A familiar face to the Premier League, Benitez is something of an outsider for the job at St. James Park. The Spaniard has impressed with Liverpool and Chelsea in his previous spells in England with Tottenham also reportedly interested in his services in the summer.

Newcastle would probably have to fork out some hefty compensation to take him from Napoli.

Tim Sherwood – 16/1

Clive RoseIn the running: Sherwood is on the lookout for a job

Like Pardew, Sherwood is far from a shrinking violet – shown on multiple occasions during his spell at Tottenham. However, the Toon faithful would probably see his appointment as an extension of the “Cockney Mafia” – something they have always staunchly opposed.

Chris Hughton 20/1

ActionReturn: Would Hughton move back to Newcastle?

Could the ex-Norwich boss be set for a shock return to the North East? It”s unlikely. Hughton took to the club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking before being replaced by Pardew in 2010.

It”d be a surprise if he accepted a return to the club under the current ownership.

Eddie Howe – 20/1

Jamie McDonaldStock rising: Howe is one of the brightest young British managers

One of the hottest prospects in the English game, Howe has taken Bournemouth from the lower leagues to the top of the Championship.

With the Cherries eyeing promotion, you”d think he would see out the season and hopefully manage the club in the top flight.

Glenn Hoddle – 20/1

GettyOut of work: Hoddle has focused on his punditry in recent years

At the other end of the scale is Glenn Hoddle, who hasn”t held a managerial position since leaving Wolves in 2006.

The ex-England boss is part of Harry Redknapp”s backroom staff at QPR and there appears more suitable options for Newcastle.
