The cost of Christmas means 3.2 million people fear they will miss their mortgage or rent payment this month, housing charity Shelter reveals today.

One in nine people surveyed are worried about their bill and 59% were struggling before the festive period.

The poll also shows 26% would be ashamed to ask for help – and the charity is urging people to seek advice as soon as possible.

Helpline adviser Nadeem Khan says: “I spoke to a lady sick with worry because she couldn’t meet payments and felt too ashamed to ask for help.

“When a court notice landed, she came to us and we were able to help.”

Shelter highlights the case of mum-of-two Katharine from Yorkshire who says: “I work every hour I can but each month I wonder if I’m going to make my rent.

"I had to stop paying bills to keep the roof over my children’s heads.”

The charity advises those struggling financially to make housing costs a priority and deal with other debts separately.

They should also open all correspondence from the mortgage lender, landlord or letting agent and keep full records of conversations.
