Manny Pacquiao optimistic Floyd Mayweather fight will happen as Amir Khan gives American five days to respond
Manny Pacquiao is growing increasingly optimistic that his long-awaited super fight with Floyd Mayweather will finally come to fruition – after Amir Khan gave the unbeaten American five days to respond to his calls for a big-money showdown in Las Vegas.
The Pac-Man and the man known as “Money” have been going back and forth over potentially the most lucrative showdown in boxing history for almost five years, only to never make a deal.
However, the showdown has once more been mooted, this time for Saturday May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Negotiations between the two parties and their rival TV networks have been going on behind the scenes since November, when Pacquiao scored a comprehensive victory over Chris Algieri in Macau and the 36-year-old Filipino believes there has finally been a breakthrough.
“We will make an announcement before the end of the month," stated Pacquiao, speaking to the Manila Standard.
"I think it will happen.”
An agreement over the long-awaited fight, arguably the most talked about non-bout in boxing history, would come as a major blow to Khan.
Floyd Mayweather and Amir Khan
Fresh from his demolition of Devon Alexander in December, Khan believes that he should be next in line to fight Mayweather, but has grown frustrated in his efforts to bring boxing”s pound-for-pound king to the table.
The Bolton fighter has handed Mayweather an ultimatum as he looks to fight in May, because he wants to start training soon.
But Khan believes that Mayweather – who twice beat Marcos Maidana in 2014 – is avoiding a fight with either he or Pacquiao, as he bids to preserve his unbeaten status.

“It”s a waiting game, I”ve given his team five days. I need to know this week because I need to start training,” declared Khan.
“I”ve answered all the things Mayweather wanted me to do: He wanted me to fight at welterweight, I did that. He wanted to do a vote, I won the vote. He wanted me to beat a top guy in the division and I gave Devon Alexander a beating he’d never had before.
“There is a lot of money in a fight with me – not just in America – but he’s trying to avoid me. He’s avoiding two names in boxing, Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan.
“Mayweather wants to keep his “0”, he doesn”t want to take the big fights. He”s fighting guys who are over the hill or not at their peak.”
