A Home Office decision to refuse to allow the grieving relatives of a five-year-old girl killed in a road tragedy to visit the UK for her funeral has been branded "callous".

Andrea Gale was killed after she was struck by a car in nearby Eastbourne, East Sussex, on Dec 16, in front of her father and her eight year old brother.

Her devastated parents have taken the heartbreaking decision to postpone her funeral, which was due to take place on Friday, in the hope immigration officials would have a change of heart.

The schoolgirls’ grandparents and aunt live in Zimbabwe and had applied for a temporary visa to visit the UK for her funeral in Polegate, East Sussex.

Tory MP Stephen Lloyd said the decision "lacks compassion and basic decency".

Andrea was airlifted to St George’s Hospital, after the incident Tooting, London, but died the following day.

The local community helped raise more than £5,000 to help cover her funeral expenses and to help her parents Wellington and Charity fly their relatives to the UK.

Mr Lloyd said:”This awful accident has shocked us all.

“Eastbourne has done what it does best in difficult situations like this and rallied around in support as a community.

“I was dismayed therefore to discover that the Immigration Services have refused point blank to issue visas for the family to come over from Zimbabwe to attend little Andrea’s funeral.

“I am extremely angry at the callousness shown by the Home Office.

“To me this is an immigration decision which lacks compassion and basic decency."
