ITV bosses launched one of the biggest clampdowns in telly history to keep the plot of the new Broadchurch secret.

They were utterly determined to stop leaks – knowing if the script of the crime nailbiter became public it could sink the series.

Security measures included making every cast member, including stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman, sign confidentiality agreements.

Scripts were watermarked, kept locked up and taken to the set and back by security guards.

All documents were protected with frequently changed passwords. Meanwhile, writers and producers exchanged “oblique emails” to throw moles off the scent.

The cast were given only excerpts of the script relevant to scenes being filmed – and several endings were shot.

A senior ITV source told the Sunday People: “The theme of the new series is secrets. And the most important part was keeping the script and plot secret. I have never witnessed anything like the secrecy and security.

"We have been joking that even the North Koreans suspected of hacking Sony pictures would have failed to glimpse the Broadchurch scripts.”

More than 10 million viewers were gripped by the first series in 2013 which saw detectives Alec Hardy (Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Colman) investigate the murder of a young boy in a small seaside town.

Writer Chris Chibnall said the new show – the first episode is on ITV1 on Monday, January 5 – had a “different engine, rhythm and voice”.

Former Doctor Who star Tennant, 43, said: “It was written as a one-off. There was no sense it was going to go again.”

Happy day: Beth and Kirk”s 80″s themed wedding in Corrie

Meanwhile in the New Year, the UK’s top soaps once again promise explosive storylines.

BBC1’s EastEnders marks its 30th anniversary with a week of live episodes in February, which see Lucy Beale’s killer unmasked and Babs Windsor, 77, back as Peggy Mitchell.

In Coronation Street Beth Tinker and Kirk Sutherland’s 80s-themed wedding on January 9 will add light relief. Gloom soon returns when a mini-bus carrying Underworld staff crashes.

Over in Emmerdale, insiders claim it won’t last for newlyweds Katie Addyman and Andy Sudden (Kelvin Fletcher) because Sammy Winward, Katie for 13 years, is leaving the series.

Favourite reality shows return – Rita Ora is a new judge in BBC1’s The Voice on January 10.

Keith Chegwin is already favourite to win Celebrity Big Brother from January 7 on C5.

Meanwhile, celebs risk all on C4’s winter sports show The Jump.

Harry Hill replaces Matthew Kelly on ITV’s Stars in Their Eyes while Emma Willis and Reggie Yates front BBC1 game show Prized Apart.

Ex-Corrie star Michelle Keegan teams up with Jason Manford in BBC1’s Ordinary Lies.

Adaptation: Hilary Mantel”s Wolf Hall

Other dramas include Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and JK Rowling’s Casual Vacancy, both on BBC1.

Jimmy McGovern is back in Banished on BBC2 about convicts sent to Australia.

Classics on the Beeb include Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Cider With Rosie, plus a new Poldark.

US series on C5 include CSI: Cyber and NCIS: New Orleans.

SKY Atlantic has crime series Fortitude starring Christopher Ecclestone, Michael Gambon and Sophie Grabol.

Two nature shows to thrill, both BBC, are The Hunt, about predators and prey and Shark.
