Campaigners slam 'extremely worrying' comments blaming young woman for being punched

Campaigners have slammed online trolls who said a young woman "deserved" to be punched in the face in a New Year”s Eve assault.

The victim, said to be a 17-year-old student, was pictured in the Mirror with blood streaming from her nose following the incident in Newcastle”s notorious Bigg Market just minutes into 2015.

Scaffolder Michael Baptist, 19, was caught on camera throwing the punch and was cautioned by police over the weekend.

But incredibly, a section of critics claim the young woman "deserved" to be punched and that the Mirror”s reporting of the story was "sexist".

Sarah Green, from the End Violence Against Women organisation, said: "These comments concerning the nasty assault in Newcastle are extremely worrying.

"They show how some people seek to make excuses for violence in public – as some do in private.

"We all need to have a good think about what kind of behaviour we tolerate."

Ms Green said she was not surprised by the level of vitriol aimed at a female victim of assault.

"Women”s organisations get online abuse all the time," she said.

"A small number of people are set off by women”s equality. They are in denial."

A stream of hate-filled commentators emailed the Mirror to claim the young woman pictured had instigated the attack.

One man wrote: "The only shocking thing about this article is the fact that you wrote it in favour of the pathetic wildebeest that was clearly at fault in this incident.

"She knocked the man over, not even bumped into him but knocked him into his feet.

"He retaliated in a way that I believe should be considered, in this day and age, necessary.

"Talk s**t, get hit."

Another added: "Punching her seemed to be justice enough without having to seek legal repercussions :)"

One man wrote: "Will you please stop pushing this feminist agenda you misandric shills?

"Is it really that difficult to understand that this man was completely within his rights, and the girl involved hopefully learnt a valuable lesson."

Another added: "You have incorrectly portrayed his actions as the worst thing in the article, and I, like many others say that starting the act of violence in the first place was the wrong thing to do.

"I think emphasis on this would discourage the minority of women who believe they are invincible due to the fact that they are a woman from starting violence in the first place. "

Another commented: "She deserved it. She shouldn”t think she can push people over and have no consequences for her actions."

And finally: "In response to your article, I label it heavily sexist and unfair.

"As stated in the article, the male was shoved to the ground and "hit the deck", after which he hit the woman.

"Is this not simply an act of retaliation? He hit her once, didn”t pursue her after the attack and there seems to be little reason for the “shove” in the first place."

Michael Baptist”s family said on Friday the teenager was "distraught" at the incident.

Northumbria Police said in a statement today: "A 19-year-old man has been cautioned for assault."
